Referrals for SHEKEL community housing are made by the municipal welfare department of the candidate's place of residence. A person interested in joining SHEKEL community housing, should contact the social worker responsible for their case and go through the formal application process as described below.
Please note: The admission process can take between several months to years, so it is worth starting early.
Prior to admission at SHEKEL
In the first stage, the candidate is referred by a social worker for evaluation in order to be recognized by an appropriate ministry of welfare department. This is called: Evaluation for the purpose of departmental recognition.
Evaluation results are transferred to the local welfare department board to determine which category of housing is appropriate for the candidate: institutional, hostel, community housing, or independent living.
Acceptance and intake stage for SHEKEL housing
Following referral to SHEKEL community housing from the welfare department, the candidate, together with his/her family and social worker, is invited to meet with the SHEKEL acceptance committee, comprised of SHEKEL's senior housing professional staff. If the candidate is found to be suitable for SHEKEL community housing, the process of finding a suitable apartment begins, either among existing SHEKEL apartments or in a new one. This process includes meetings with a psychologist/psychiatrist, a house visit and parent/family guidance. It also includes finding a suitable work framework for the candidate as acceptance to SHEKEL housing is conditional on the candidate being part of an appropriate work framework.
Joining SHEKEL's supported housing
