Extended School Day in Special Education
SHEKEL runs extended school day programs in Jerusalem's special education schools since 1992. The goal of the program is to make it easier for families by enabling them to continue raising their younger children at home without requiring an external solution. The extended school day program operates in nine special education schools throughout Jerusalem: five on the western side and four on the eastern side.
The extended school day program and the rehabilitative day care centers are designated for students in special education who are recognized as such by the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare.
The program's staff numbers 65 people, including coordinators and professionals such as doctors, social workers, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and professional assistants; and activity instructors in art, computers, music, gardening, sports, movement therapy, and pet therapy.
SHEKEL initiates fundraising activities for the schools in order to purchase advanced equipment and to improve treatments and working conditions.
