Community Project 'Café-in-the-Park

In the heart of Jerusalem's Kiryat Moshe neighborhood, an exceptional community project is energizing the hearts and souls of local residents. Initiated by SHEKEL and the Bet Ross Community Center, as means of including local resident with disabilities in community life, 'Café in the Park' is operated by a team of 50 volunteers including 12 people with special needs.

A wide variety of community activities, such as pre-shabbat events, day-camps, workshops, shows and happenings are organized by the volunteers, around a delightful small café, staffed by people with special needs. The throngs of visitors to the area include, families, senior citizens, children and youth, among which are many people with disabilities, who feel comfortable joining in activities in an accessible environment, where other people with special needs volunteer. At 'Café in the Park', people with disabilities comprise a vital contributing part of the local community and this has led to a widespread understanding among neighborhood residents, that there is a natural place for people with disabilities within the community.

The Jerusalem Mayor's Award of Distinction for Outstanding Voluntary Organizations was received by Malachi Baadani of SHEKEL and Yedidya Tenaami of Bet Ross.
