Questions and Answers

Q: What are SHEKEL’s sources of income?

A. 65% of SHEKEL’s income comes from government and city allocations and from public foundations such as the National Insurance Institute, Joint-Israel, Keren Shalem, etc. 35% of the budget comes from donations.

Q: What percentage goes towards administrative costs?

A: SHEKEL’s small, efficient administrative staff enables us to keep administrative costs at no more than 8%, totaling around NIS 3,000,000.

Q: What are donations used for?

A: Government allocations cover only the basic costs of our housing, vocational rehabilitation and culture and leisure programs. Special treatments and activities, such as trips, outings, social events, which are so important and enriching, are not covered nor are development and new projects. This is made possible thanks to the generosity of our private donors and foundations in Israel and abroad.

Q: Can I donate for a specific purpose?

A: of course. You may request that your donation be used for a specific purpose when you donate. You can also donate in memory or in honor of a loved one, friend or family member or in honor of a special occasion. We will be happy to send a card or certificate to the person you wish to honor advising him of your donation to SHEKEL.

Q: Are donations to SHEKEL income tax deductible?

A: Donations to SHEKEL are income tax deductible in Israel under section 46. In the USA, SHEKEL has 501 (c) (3) status. To receive a US Income Tax deduction (minimum donation $25), please make checks payable to PEF, specifying For: SHEKEL and send to: PEF Israel Endowment Funds, 630 Third Ave. 15th Fl. New York N.Y. 10017, USA. Donations to SHEKEL are recognized as “ma’aser” (charity) by Chief Rabbi of Israel Rav Yonah Metzger.

Q: I am unable to make a large donation, but still want to help. Will my small donation make a difference?

A: SHEKEL welcomes all donations large or small. Every donation helps and a lot of small amounts add up! There are also other ways to help SHEKEL such as volunteering, passing on information about our work, hosting our clients or bringing guests to visit our center.
