SHEKEL Trauma Center N., born with Down syndrome, was lovingly cared for by her family till age 13. The following year after her mother died, her father became preoccupied with work and neglected N. The local welfare authorities discovered she had been raped by her brother and had her removed from the home. Trying to cope with guilt, fear and loneliness while living in a strange place, far from everything familiar, she also had to deal with the family's denials and accusations. SHEKEL's new center is the first of its kind in Israel to help N. and other youth with disabilities who suffer from abandonment, violence or physical and sexual abuse. As a result of their disabilities, they are at double the risk of other children and require a center to deal with their special needs. For further information, please contact traumacenter@shekel.org.il or call 02-671-1710. Opening Ceremony- From Left to Right: Mr. Uri Lupolianski, Mayor of Jerusalem; Mr. Itzchak (Buji) Herzog, Minister of Social Wellfare; Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Moshe (Boogie) Ya’alon, President of Shekel.
